Folkmanis builds the swallowtail with a pocket under the body, so one finger moves both wings up and down. Teachers, librarians and parents of toddlers who love bugs all reach for it.

How it flies

Slide your finger into the body from underneath and lift. The wings rise together. Lower your finger and they settle. With a little rhythm the butterfly flutters across the room, lands on a shoulder and takes off again. Young kids can work it, since the action is a single finger rather than a whole hand of coordination.

Folkmanis builds it with exceptionally realistic details, so the puppet doubles as a model for a nature unit. The design has won awards, and the materials are made for years of play. At 12 inches wide, it is easy to see from the back row of a library story circle.

Specifications

Folkmanis swallowtail butterfly plush hand puppet

Multicolored wings

Measures 10 x 12 x 2 inches (L x W x H)

Finger pocket under the body flaps the wings

Slips over the hand

Care and classroom use

Spot clean with a damp cloth and air dry flat so the wings keep their shape. Store it on a shelf, not at the bottom of a bin, because crushed wings take a while to recover. Pair it with a caterpillar puppet to act out metamorphosis, or let it visit each child during circle time for a quiet moment. Ask each child to count the flaps before the butterfly lands on the next hand. At home it works for bedtime stories, pretend garden play and as a gift for a kid who already has every stuffed mammal in the house.

Safety information

WARNING: CHOKING HAZARD -- Small parts.
