The standard listing gives you 1000 ft of 50 lb line, with heavier 80, 100 and 150 lb options on 500 or 1000 ft spools. Kite clubs and families with more than one flyer get plenty to go around.

Specifications

Standard spool: 50 lb x 1000 ft

Other sizes: 80 lb x 500 ft, 100 lb x 1000 ft, 150 lb x 500 ft

Material: braided polyester

Model number: 3430

Package size: 6.0 x 2.5 x 2.0 inches, 0.45 lb

Brand: In the Breeze

Choosing a line weight

Match the pound rating to the kite, not to the wind you hope for. A 50 lb line suits small single line kites and children's diamonds, where a light line keeps the kite flying in a gentle breeze. Move to 80 lb for mid-size deltas, and pick 100 or 150 lb for large kites or anything flown on a gusty beach. Because it comes on one bulk spool, a single purchase can stock several reels or winders. The four size options cover two lengths, 500 ft and 1000 ft, so you can buy the amount that matches how often you fly. Model 3430 comes in a package of about 6 by 2.5 by 2 inches, small enough to keep in a kite bag.

Cutting and storing bulk line

Measure out the length you need, cut with sharp scissors, and melt the end briefly to stop fraying. Wind the braided polyester kite line onto a reel or winder under light tension so it comes off cleanly next time. Keep the spool dry between outings. Label each cut length with its pound rating, since 50 lb and 80 lb line look alike once they are off the original spool.

Shop more kite line and flying accessories at Big Frenchies.
