Every aquarium runs on a biological process called the nitrogen cycle. Fish waste and uneaten food break down into ammonia, which is highly toxic. Beneficial bacteria convert that ammonia into nitrite (also toxic), and a second set of bacteria convert nitrite into nitrate, which is far less harmful in small amounts. This bacterial colony takes time to establish, which is why a brand new tank needs to "cycle" for roughly 4 to 6 weeks before it can safely support a full stock of fish.
For a standard freshwater community tank, four numbers matter most. Ammonia and nitrite should always be zero; even a small reading of 1 ppm can be fatal to sensitive fish. Nitrate is more forgiving but should stay well under 40 ppm. pH tolerance depends on species, but most community fish do well between 6.5 and 7.5.
Straight tap water contains chlorine or chloramine, both of which are harmful to fish and to the beneficial bacteria in your filter. A water conditioner neutralizes these chemicals instantly, and should be used every time you fill the tank or do a water change.
Filtration does three jobs at once: it removes physical debris, it houses the beneficial bacteria that process ammonia and nitrite, and in some designs it polishes water clarity with UV or carbon media. Match filter flow rate (measured in gallons per hour, or GPH) to your tank size, and lean toward the larger end of the recommended range if you keep a heavier fish load.

Oxygen exchange happens at the water's surface, so agitation matters as much as filtration. A note on medication: always remove carbon filter media before dosing (it will strip the medication out of the water), dose at the labeled amount for your exact tank volume, and keep up with water changes during treatment. Weekly water changes of 10 to 25 percent are the most effective habit in the entire hobby. They dilute accumulated nitrate, replenish trace minerals, and give you a regular checkpoint to notice anything unusual with your fish before it becomes an emergency.
