Every gold piece we sell is stamped with a karat (10K, 14K, or 18K), and that number tells you how much of it is actually gold. Here is what the numbers mean, how they affect durability, color, and price, and how to decide which one is right for you.
Key Takeaways

Karat (K) measures gold purity as parts per 24. Pure gold is 24K: all 24 parts gold, no other metal. Anything below that is an alloy, meaning it is mixed with other metals such as copper, silver, or zinc for strength. Pure gold on its own is soft enough to scratch and bend easily, so every karat below 24K is a trade-off between purity and durability. Each karat equals about 4.17% gold.
| Karat | Gold content | Durability | Color | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10K | 41.7% | Highest | Paler yellow | Daily wear, active lifestyles, budget |
| 14K | 58.3% | High | Classic warm yellow | Engagement and everyday rings |
| 18K | 75% | Moderate | Rich, deep yellow | Luxury pieces, sensitive skin |
| 24K | 99.9% | Low (very soft) | Bright orange-yellow | Investment bullion, rarely jewelry |

The richest color and highest gold content of the three, often associated with luxury fine jewelry. Softer than 10K or 14K, so it can show wear a bit more easily over time.

If you want something you can wear every day without babying it, like a work ring or a piece you never take off, 10K's extra durability is a real advantage. If you want the classic balance most fine jewelry uses, 14K is the safest default. If color and gold content matter more to you than day-to-day durability, 18K delivers the richest look, especially in rose and yellow gold, and it is often the better pick for people whose skin reacts to cheaper metals.

Look inside a ring band or near a clasp. You will usually see a karat mark (10K, 14K, 18K) or a European fineness number (417, 585, 750), where the number is parts per thousand of gold. The Federal Trade Commission recommends also checking for a maker's trademark next to the quality mark, since that identifies who stands behind the claim. Pieces marked GP, GEP, or HGE are gold plated, and GF means gold filled, not solid gold.

Karat measures gold purity out of 24 parts. 24K is pure gold; 10K, 14K, and 18K are alloys mixed with other metals for strength, with the karat number telling you what fraction is actually gold.
It depends on what you want. 18K has more pure gold and a richer color, but it is softer and can show scratches more easily. 14K is more durable for everyday wear while still looking like fine jewelry. It is not a strict upgrade either way.
Yes. 10K gold is 41.7% pure gold by weight, alloyed with other metals for durability. For decades it was the lowest karat that could be sold as gold in the US. The FTC removed that minimum in 2018, so lower-karat pieces now exist, which makes checking the karat stamp more important than ever.
Higher karat gold has less alloy metal, so 18K is usually the gentlest option, followed by 14K. White gold can contain nickel, so ask about the alloy if you have a nickel allergy.
They are European fineness marks showing parts per thousand of gold: 417 equals 10K, 585 equals 14K, and 750 equals 18K.
