A swing set is usually the single biggest purchase in the backyard, which makes it the one most worth researching before you buy. Between wood, metal, and modular climbing wall systems, plus real safety standards around clearance zones and ground cover, there is more to a good decision than picking whichever one looks nicest in the catalog photo. Here is what actually matters, plus real options at a few different price points and yard sizes.
Every swing set on the market falls into one of three broad categories, and each one trades off differently between upkeep, cost, and how much yard it eats up.
Wood swing sets look great but need a yearly stain or seal to hold up against weather. Metal and modular wall systems need far less upkeep.

ASTM F1487 is the Standard Consumer Safety Performance Specification for Playground Equipment for Public Use, and it spells out everything from minimum beam thickness to maximum gaps between components to fall-surface requirements. Reputable manufacturers of home swing sets generally design to the same spacing and hardware rules even when the commercial standard technically does not apply to a backyard purchase.
The two numbers worth remembering when you are planning where a swing set will go are clearance and ground cover. The Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends a safety zone of at least 6 feet in every direction from the edge of stationary climbing equipment. Swings need more: the clearance in front of and behind the swing should equal roughly twice the height of the pivot point above the ground. For a swing that hangs from an 8 foot beam, that works out to around 14 feet of total clear space along the swing's arc.
Under all of it, a layer of loose-fill ground cover, about 9 inches deep, is the accepted minimum for cushioning a fall from an 8 foot high swing set. Engineered wood fiber is generally considered the best-performing option for home use, with rubber mulch, sand, and pea gravel as acceptable alternatives. Grass and bare dirt do not count as adequate cushioning on their own.

Whichever material you choose, a short seasonal routine keeps a swing set safe and extends its life by years. Check all bolts, hooks, and S-hooks for rust or looseness at the start of each season, since hardware is the first thing to work loose under regular use. Wood sets should be inspected for splintering or soft spots and restained or resealed roughly once a year, more often in wetter climates. Metal frames hold up with far less attention, but it is still worth wiping down powder-coated finishes and checking for any exposed, rusting joints where the coating has chipped. Ropes, nets, and fabric swing seats wear out before the frame does on most sets, so plan on replacing those components every few years regardless of the material underneath them. Finally, top off ground cover as it compacts or scatters over the season: loose-fill materials like engineered wood fiber and rubber mulch settle over time and need to be topped up to keep the full 9 inches of cushioning in place.
Metal swing sets need the least maintenance since galvanized or powder-coated steel resists rust and weather with little upkeep. Wood swing sets look more natural in most yards but need yearly staining or sealing to prevent splintering, rot, or warping.

An 8 foot high swing needs about 14 feet of clear space along its arc. A compact modular wall-mounted swing and climbing system needs far less room and works well for smaller yards.
