How to focus a spyglass
Pull the tube out all the way first. Then look through the eyepiece and push the barrel back in, a little at a time, until the object you want to see turns clear. Each distance needs a slightly different length, so you will slide the tube a bit as you scan from near to far. Kids get the hang of it after a few tries and love the moment a far-off tree or boat snaps into focus.
Take it along on boat trips, bird walks, sports games, concerts or sightseeing days. A pirate costume feels complete with a brass spyglass in hand, and a scavenger hunt gets more exciting when the captain can scan the yard for clues.
Decor and care
Closed up, the spyglass looks at home on a desk, mantel or bookshelf. Set it near a globe, a map or a model boat for a nautical corner in an office or kid's room.
Brass darkens over time when it meets air and hand oils. Wipe the body with a soft dry cloth after use, and use a brass polish now and then if you prefer a bright shine. Clean the lenses with a lens cloth only. Collapse the tube before storing it, and keep it in a drawer or case so the glass stays free of scratches. Remind kids never to look at the sun through it.
