Details
A rubber band ornithopter flies the way a bird does, by flapping. TEDCO's Tim Classic, model 79000, winds up with a rubber band that drives precision gears, and those gears beat the wings so Tim lifts off and glides across a field. Kids ages 5 and up, science teachers and anyone curious about how flight works get a toy and a lesson in one.

How an ornithopter flies
Airplanes get lift from fixed wings and thrust from a propeller. An ornithopter gets both from flapping. When you wind the rubber band and let go, the gear train converts the unwinding motion into a steady wing beat. Each downstroke pushes air back and down, which moves Tim forward and keeps him up. Watch the flight and you see the same mechanics that a pigeon or a gull uses, slowed down enough to follow.
Tear-proof wings matter because an ornithopter lands wherever the band runs out, which is often a hedge or a fence post. Tim survives those landings and flies again after a rewind.
Getting the best flight
Tim makes a good opener for a unit on flight at a science fair, scout meeting or STEM camp, since it is a hands-on way to learn the mechanics of flight.
Safety information
WARNING: CHOKING HAZARD -- Small parts. Not for children under 3 yrs.
Pick a calm day and an open space such as a park or a school field. Wind the rubber band the number of turns the instructions suggest, hold Tim level at shoulder height and release with a gentle forward push. Fewer winds give a short test flight; more winds send him farther. Tim Classic is the original flapping bird, and the design still draws a crowd at a picnic.
