Why an abacus still earns a spot on the desk
The abacus comes from ancient China and counted numbers long before modern digits. Some merchants, traders and clerks still use one today. Moving beads by hand makes numbers visible, so a child can see how ten ones become a ten and why carrying works.
Practice on the soroban builds speed with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Teachers can use it in a math lesson, during tutoring or in an after-school abacus course.
How to start using it
Lay the abacus flat and push all beads away from the center bar to clear it. Each of the 11 columns stands for a place value, starting with ones on the right.
Start with simple addition, then work up to bigger sums as your child gets comfortable. Short daily sessions of five to ten minutes work well for beginners. Beyond the classroom, it works as a classic office calculator or a gift for abacus collectors. Wipe the frame with a dry cloth.
