Details
The Flexzion soroban abacus is an 11 inch Japanese counting frame with 17 rods, each carrying one bead above the bar and four below. Kids learning place value and adults brushing up on mental arithmetic move the beads to add, subtract, multiply and divide. You get a calculator that shows every step of the work.

How a soroban teaches numbers
Each rod stands for one place: ones, tens, hundreds and so on across 17 columns. The single upper bead counts five and each lower bead counts one, so a child sees that 7 is a five plus two ones. Carrying from one column to the next becomes a physical motion of the fingers, which is why many students who struggle with written arithmetic grasp it faster on the beads. Flexzion describes the frame as portable, and the sturdy ABS plastic takes daily handling in a classroom or a kitchen. Accounting students and business owners use the same tool to check sums without a screen. Teachers like that a whole class can follow one problem on a shared frame, and parents like that there is nothing to charge, update or lose in a settings menu. Seventeen rods also give room for long numbers and multi-step problems.
Getting started
Clear the soroban abacus by pushing all beads away from the center beam, then set a number by sliding beads toward it. Practice reading two-digit numbers before you attempt addition, then move on to carrying across columns. Students, beginners and professionals can all work through the same steps on it. A damp cloth cleans the frame, and the compact size slides into a backpack for school or travel.
