HISTORY ASPECTS:
The Sturmgeschütz III Ausf.A was the first production model of Germany’s now-legendary assault gun series. Developed to provide direct fire support for infantry, the StuG.III Ausf.A mounted a 75mm short-barreled StuK 37 L/24 gun on the reliable Panzer III chassis. With its low profile, strong frontal armor, and compact design, it was ideally suited for smashing enemy bunkers, machine gun nests, and lightly armored vehicles. Entering service in 1940, the Ausf.A saw its first major use in the early campaigns in France and the Balkans, but it was in Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941, where it first encountered the full brutality of mechanized warfare on the Eastern Front.
One of the early commanders of a StuG.III Ausf.A during Barbarossa was Michael Wittmann, who would later become one of the most famous tank aces of World War II. Assigned to the Waffen-SS division “Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler,” Wittmann’s crew participated in the initial stages of the offensive into Soviet territory. In this period, the StuG III Ausf.A was used to devastating effect in supporting infantry attacks, breaking through Soviet fortifications, and engaging retreating forces in rapid advances across the steppes. Wittmann quickly demonstrated remarkable tactical skill, contributing to the swift capture of towns and enemy strongpoints.
Although the Ausf.A lacked the long-barreled, high-velocity guns that later StuGs used against Soviet tanks like the T-34, it played a critical role in the early German successes during Barbarossa. Units like Wittmann’s adapted to rapidly changing combat conditions, often facing stiff resistance and punishing counterattacks. The experience Wittmann gained in his Ausf.A laid the foundation for his later legendary career in Tiger tanks. The early StuG’s contributions during 1941 helped establish the doctrine of self-propelled assault guns as integral to German mechanized warfare.
This 1:72 scale model perfectly captures the early-war configuration and battlefield presence of this iconic vehicle. A finely detailed tribute to one of WWII’s most significant figures and his machine, it’s an essential piece for collectors, diorama builders, and enthusiasts of German armored history.
