Established in 1910, Glacier National Park was created to protect the glacially carved ecosystem, home to once 150 active glaciers and 25 active glaciers today. The park is within the larger physical region extending across the U.S/ Canadian border called, “Crown of the Continent.” This larger area has been referred to by different names by the indigenous tribes native to the area including the Salish/Kootenai who called the park, “the place where there is a lot of ice,” as well as “Backbone of the World,” by the Blackfeet tribe, whose reservation borders the eastern boundary of the park.
