How the family plays
Start with Go Fish. Kids ask for a match by picture or by number, so a child who cannot read yet can still play. "Do you have a bat?" works as well as "Do you have a ten?" The back-and-forth keeps young players involved, and the fun starts the first time your child sends you fishing.
When the group wants a change, switch to Old Maid and pass cards until someone gets stuck with the odd one out. Slap Jack adds speed: flip cards into the middle and slap the right one first. Having three games in one deck means the cards come out again and again through October and beyond.
Cards are poker size and easy for small hands to hold and shuffle. The Halloween characters add a little mischief without being scary, which suits preschoolers and early grade schoolers.
