Why tracing in sand helps
Moving the sand with a fingertip gives tactile handwriting practice, since the line stays visible as the hand moves.
Mistakes cost nothing here. Your child swipes the scraper block across the tray and the sand is flat again. That freedom helps a hesitant writer try a tricky letter like a lowercase g many times in a row.
Once finger tracing feels easy, switch to the wooden pen. You can call out a letter, show a flashcard, or ask your child to write their name.
Setup and cleanup
Pour a thin, even layer of sand into the tray. Too much sand blurs the lines, so start with a shallow layer and add more if needed. Place the tray on a towel or a mat to catch stray grains.
After each session, tip the sand back into its bag for storage. Wipe the tray with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Keep the pen and scraper with the bag so the kit stays complete. Supervise younger children so sand stays in the tray and away from mouths. A quiet five-minute session before lunch works well as a daily routine.
