How tactile letters teach reading
Each piece carries a sandpaper letter. The child traces the rough shape, feels where the stroke starts and ends, and hears the letter sound from the adult at the same time. Touch, sight and sound land together in one multisensory lesson. You present two or three letters at a time, name the sounds, and let the child trace until the motion feels natural.
Tracing builds the finger muscles and the pencil grip that handwriting needs later. Lower case comes first in most Montessori sequences, since most of what a child reads is lower case, and the capital letters follow once the sounds are solid. Kinesthetic learners who struggle with flashcards often click with a letter they can feel, and kids who already know a few sounds can use the letters to start building short words on a mat.

Keep the Montessori sandpaper letters in order so a child can find the letter they want. Wipe the letters with a dry cloth and keep water off the sandpaper. Present the letters on a small rug at a low table where a child can sit and trace.
