A soapstone carving kit lets a child from age 8 file a block of real stone into a small cat and polish it by hand. Studiostone Creative supplies a pre-cut block of Brazilian soapstone, and the finished sculpture measures about 2 by 1 by 3 inches. Most carvers finish in about 90 minutes.

How the carving goes
You start with the rasp, filing away the corners until the cat takes shape. Soapstone is soft, so a child can shape it without power tools. Carvers have used this smooth, soft stone for thousands of years, and the name comes from its unique texture. Dip the stone in water now and then to keep the project mess free.
Once the shape looks right, switch to the coarse sandpaper to remove file marks, then the fine grade to smooth the surface. Rub the polishing wax over the stone and buff it with the cloth. The stone's natural color ranges from green to brown and differs from block to block, so no two cats match.
Studiostone Creative uses natural, non-toxic materials in the kit, and no prior experience is needed. Adults enjoy it as much as kids, and the finished cat works as a handmade gift or a shelf piece. Beginners and intermediate sculptors both get a satisfying project, and the video tutorials show each stage if a step is unclear. It also suits anyone who already enjoys woodworking, whittling or crafting.

- Returns are only available for US orders. International orders are final sale.

- Jewelry and watches are not returnable.
