Details
The Fidget Game reading bundle turns sight word practice into a game kids ask to play. A kindergarten teacher designed it to cover Dolch sight words from kindergarten through Grade 2. Children read a flashcard, roll the dice and pop bubbles on a colorful fidget mat.
What's in the box
- Sight word flashcards for kindergarten, Grade 1 and Grade 2
- 220 Dolch words split by grade level
- Pop fidget toys used as the game mat
- Dice for each turn
- A storage box for each grade level
How you play
Draw a card and ask your child to read the word aloud. A correct read earns a roll of the dice and a chance to pop bubbles on the colorful mat. Several players can join, parents included, so siblings can play at their own grade level side by side.
The word lists follow US Common Core standards. They mix verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions and conjunctions. Sight words make up 50 to 70 percent of general text, so knowing them on sight frees kids to focus on what a story means.
The flashcards are bright, solid and easy for small hands to hold. After a round, kids pack each grade's cards back into its box. That small habit keeps the set tidy and makes it easy to take the game on a trip.
Short rounds work well after school. Pick ten cards from your child's grade, play until the stack runs out, then switch to a new set the next day. Kids who know a whole grade's words can move up to the next box, which gives them a clear goal to work toward.
