The city even served as the nation’s capital after the Revolutionary War and was where George Washington resigned his commission as commander and chief of the Continental Army. Unfortunately, the march of progress often ignores history, and development was threatening important historic sites when Historic Annapolis stepped in. Intense and tireless effort was dedicated to buying and preserving the homes of some of the signers of the Declaration of Independence and other early residents, and to curbing destructive growth. As a result, Historic Annapolis succeeded in the Colonial Annapolis Historic District being added to the National Register of Historic Places as a National Historic Landmark. Dowdle celebrates the historic city center of Annapolis in this vibrant painting.
